FOSSIL WATCH REDESIGN

DESIGNER / SHERYN BALDAS / 2024

Redesigning the 'Fossil Watch' to incorporate the values of ingenuity, creativity and artistry founded in the 'FOSSIL' mission. Offering a redesign using the form of Salvador Dali's work 'The Persistence of Memory' blending with the detailing of traditional Japanese Koi fish.

OBJECTIVE

To redesign a watch face and learn the technical skills of 3D modelling, rounded shapes and forms and incorporating high detailing. The project handles both the skills of creativity, technical skill and conception.

RATIONALE

Upon researching the mission and goals of 'FOSSIL', the company creating and manufacturing the Fossil Watch, it pushed past form and function to deliver highly detailed and tasteful jewelry at varying price points. In order to capture my target audience, the at large western demographic, I drew from the concept of time through Salvador Dali's 'The Persistence of Memory', initiating conversations of ephemeral time and place. The smaller detailing using the Japanese Koi fish, especially the iconography of circling one another, offers an ending point of the conversation using the Japanese eye, the Koi fish symbolizing strength, perseverance and good fortune. The koi fish circling each other meaning an infinite source of energy and an everlasting balance.

OUTCOME

The design is an elegant and contemporary take on art history and Japanese mythology, forming an endless cycle of conversation on ephemerality and infinity. Although dynastically opposed, circle one another akin to the Koi fish founded in the watches pond.

LEARNED SKILLS

In my rudimentary knowledge of CAD modelling I began to create an understanding of stubbornness in my design process. It was easy to abandon details and parts to service the timeline of the project, however, in learning and pushing for understanding in the technical parts of the project, I came to fully utilize the tools given and expand my current knowledge. Key milestones in my understanding became the importance of accuracy and measurement, using a caliber to measure the parts properly for function, alongside creating one-to-one models in order to grasp the form. Overall this project offered an immense amount of gratification, alongside bringing in confidence in my skills (although still learning) in rendering and modelling past concept.
